She also likes to collect things: angels (they remind her of her late mother), tiny boxes from different countries or of fanciful shape, nineteenth century children's literature, and books about quantum physics-especially about the mystery of the dark energy in the universe. Once, while hiking, she saw a snow-white buck which allowed her to follow it nearly half a mile. She loves to visit a friend's little cabin in the Point Reyes National Seashore area, which has lots of trees, lots of animals, lots of beaches to walk on, and lots of places to hike. She lives in the Bay Area of California, with a backyard that is full of flowers, which she adores, especially with many different shades of roses. She has written over two dozen books for children and young adults, and has enjoyed writing every one of them. Fever mode occurs when a bar in the middle of the screen is filled up. When a player's board fills up, either if they cannot make groups or if they are sent a large amount of trash (usually the latter), they lose and the other player will win.Ī new addition to the game mechanics is Fever mode. These will only fall if the player fails to make a chain, and trash falls in groups of 30 (one rock) at a time. These trash puyo are colorless and will only pop when puyo next to them do so, rather than in groups as normal. Garbage temporarily gets stored in a bar above the playfield, represented by symbols and warning the player of an incoming amount of garbage. Any above will fall down and can form more groups for a chain reaction.Įach time groups of puyo pop, the player will score points and send «trash» (aka «garbage» and «nuisance») to their opponent. After placing each set of puyo, any groups of four or more of the same colored adjacent puyo will pop. The basic game mechanics are mainly similar to those of Puyo Puyo: the player has a 6×12 board, and must decide where to place incoming groups of variously-colored blobs, or puyo. Although I remembered a few elements of this book before reading it a second time, I mostly only remembered the fact that I liked it. My experience reading this novel at sixteen years old in comparison to my experience when I was nine is quite a different one. Although I recall enjoying this novel, I did not pick it up again until now, oddly enough for the same reasons that made me originally decide to read it. The first being my fascination with the Great Depression, the second being my enthusiasm for jazz music, and the third being my interest in racial inequality and general discrimination. What originally intrigued me about this story all those years ago were three things. I read it around the time that I discovered my passion for jazz music, a passion that I have carried throughout my life to this day. I remember first reading Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis when I was nine years old. We would do well to remember one of Wilde’s most memorable aphorisms from his 1891 ‘Preface’ to The Picture of Dorian Gray (a novel we have analysed here): ‘All art is quite useless.’ The fact that the red rose turns out not to be of any practical use, Wilde would doubtless remind us, is not the point. The problem is that, as so often in Wilde’s work, the modern world is too practical-minded to appreciate art for its own sake (‘art for art’s sake’ was the unofficial slogan for Aestheticism, a movement for which Wilde was a prominent spokesperson). The Nightingale is the symbolic and total embodiment of this impulse. Artists often talk about ‘putting a lot of themselves’ into their art, or ‘pouring their heart out’ or ‘giving themselves’ to their art. So, viewed this way, the Nightingale’s sacrifice is not so pointless, since it produced a work of art.
